In 2021, the Scottish Football Museum, Hampden Park, was awarded funding to create a trail based on women’s history. The project was delivered by the Museum’s curatorial staff and our volunteer Curatorial Assistant. There were four objectives for the funding:
• Commission four artworks
• Commission a custom trail
• Update 5 existing text panels
• Host a girls community football club
The funding allowed the Museum to commission an artist to paint four subjects relating to women’s football in Scotland. As discussed, the Museum struggles to represent women pre 1970 so it was decided that the four subjects should help address this. The Museum selected a depiction of Carstairs 1628, Emma Clarke, Helen Matthew and Chrissie Stevenson. These artworks have helped to tell stories not yet represented by objects.
The project commissioned a women’s history trail with a professional trail writer to produce an 8 stop trail which led the audience through the Museum beginning in 1628 and ending in 2019. The trail is comprised of four stops which take in the new artworks and four stops which take in object based cases.
This event was supported by the Year of Stories 2022 Community Stories Fund. This fund was delivered in partnership between VisitScotland and Museums Galleries Scotland with support from National Lottery Heritage Fund thanks to National Lottery players.
